ALL PARENTS MATTER
Kilometer Thirteen works with all parents, birthing and
non-birthing. Every parent plays a special role in the life of
the baby and deserves to be honored, acknowledged,
and supported.
Kilometer Thirteen offers support before,
during, and after the NICU stay.
Kilometer Thirteen works with all parents to process their
own birth stories, so that they may focus on the present,
rather than be hijacked by unconscious and unresolved
feelings from their own past.
Kilometer Thirteen works with all parents to improve
self-awareness, communication, and partner-partner relational
connection. These skills can be a great resource within
the partner-partner relationship, during the birth, while
coping with NICU experiences, and after the NICU stay.
Parents are supported to connect with each other and
bond with their baby. Attending to the family relationships
often fosters healthy behaviors in the baby, including
engaged attachment, sound sleep, connected and
conscious crying, ability to settle and soothe,
and engaged feeding.
INTEGRATION OF BIRTH STORY
Kilometer Thirteen holds a safe space for families to
process their experience from any point in their
conception, pregnancy, birth, and post-birth journey.
NICU CARE
Parents often feel pressured to "keep it together" for
the sake of their partner(s) and baby. Kilometer Thirteen
provides safety for parents to be real and express
what they need to. This sometimes means sitting in
silence together to honor the magnitude of the situation.
It may mean validating your reality and supporting you to
be where you need to be and do what you need to do.
Family may not always be able to be present with
the neonate or infant in the NICU. When increased human
connection is desired for your baby, Kilometer Thirteen
may provide supplemental care in the NICU.
Kilometer Thirteen responds when your neonate or infant
experiences prolonged periods of crying, lack of connection,
fast or slow heart rate, excessive or weak respiratory rate, and
other forms of dysregulation. You may prearrange for K13 to
provide standby services. This also extends to accompanying
your baby during procedures. K13 can help your child to feel
human connection and safety in the midst of chaotic or
disturbing---but necessary---medical care.
PALLIATIVE CARE
The circumstances of the NICU may place families in the position of
having to make impossible decisions. It is inherent in the nature of
these choices that they are fraught with double binds. Kilometer
Thirteen appreciates the difficulty of sitting in these tensions to
make extraordinarily painful decisions. Kilometer Thirteen
knows that—imperfect though it may be—you have
reached the best decision for you and your family.
If your baby requires palliative care, Kilometer Thirteen can
supplement family care to reduce any period of time when
your baby might, otherwise, be alone on their journey.
